Antioxidant Properties of Polyphenols and Their Potential Use in Improvement of Male Fertility: A Review
نویسندگان
چکیده
There has been a growing interest in the use of plant bioactive substances, such as polyphenols, as antioxidants in assisted reproduction technologies. Previous studies have focused on the use of vitamins C and E as potent antioxidants for semen cryopreservation in mammals [1,2]. However, some polyphenols such as quercetin, a secondary metabolite in plants, have been found to exhibit higher antioxidant activity and lower toxicity than synthetic antioxidants [3,4]. Plant derived compounds and their capacity for improvement of fertility have been previously examined through intake as dietary supplements in humans and in animals [5,6]. Assisted reproduction technologies, such as cryopreservation and in vitro fertilization (IVF), may also involve the use of antioxidant supplements in culture media [7,8].

Polyphenols isolated from virgin coconut oil attenuate cadmium-induced dyslipidemia and oxidative stress due to their antioxidant properties and potential benefits on cardiovascular risk ratios in rats
Objective: Literature has confirmed the pathogenic role of cadmium (Cd) and its exposure in the induction of dyslipidemia implicated in the development and increasing incidence of cardiovascular diseases. The current study explored whether polyphenolics isolated from virgin coconut oil (VCO) prevent Cd-induced dyslipidemia and investigate the underlying mechanism of action, in rats. Materials a...
متن کاملP-46: The Effect of Oral Antioxidants on Male Infertility
Background: The use of antioxidants in treatment of infertile men has been suggested, although the evidence base for this practice is unclear. A systematic review of randomized studies was conducted to evaluate the effects of oral antioxidants (vitamins C and E, zinc, selenium, folate, carnitine and carotenoids) on sperm quality and pregnancy rate in infertile men. Materials and Methods: MEDLIN...
متن کاملInfluence of pomegranate juice on sperm parameters and fertility in mice
Introduction: Sperm fertilization depends on a number of factors such as sperm count, motility and morphology. A variety of factors, including free radicals, may disturb the sperm characteristics. Elements such as vitamins C & E and polyphenols have anti-oxidental effects. Since sperms are weak in overcoming free radicals the aim of this study was to determine the effect of (PJ) on sperm co...
متن کاملP-20: Role of Green Tea in Increasing Fertility
Background: Green tea is a popular type of tea that is made of unfermented tea leaves. Green tea has been used for thousands of years by people in Eastern countries for a variety of health reasons. One of the primary benefits of Green Tea in regard to fertility is not in what it contains, but rather in what it does not contain. Materials and Methods: In the present study attempts to investigate...
متن کاملReactive Oxygen Species and Antioxidant in Seminal Plasma and Their Impact on Male Fertility
Spermatozoa generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) in physiological amounts which play a role in sperm functions during sperm capacitation acrosome reaction (AR) and oocyte fusion. In addition damaged sperm are likely to be the source of ROS. The most important ROS produced by human sperm are hydrogen peroxide superoxide anion and hydroxyl radicals. Besides human seminal plasma and sperm posses...
